Why is there a general apathy to weight loss monitoring? Is weight loss only a means to an end? Weight loss is not a stop-gap mechanism. You do not get on to the treadmill once in 6 months to shed a few pounds and then forget about it. Neither do you eat selectively for a limited period of time and go back to binging sooner than you had expected. Weight loss is an end in itself. It needs to be incorporated into our daily hectic schedule so that it is a part of our routine - on the same terms as eating, sleeping, talking and breathing.
Weight loss is an integral part of a lifestyle change. Lifestyle change is what most people refer to now when discussions abound on the ill effects of fast paced life and technology dependent populations. Imagine a scenario where more than 50 percent of your workload turned manual. Imagine a world without computers again. The power of technology brings with it some responsibilities as well. While it is immensely empowering to reduce degrees of separation between people and entities across the world, technology also brings with it a sense of responsibility of using it efficiently without ignoring some really important other factors that govern your life.
We are perhaps, not taking time out from our busy schedules to ponder over this simple but sad truth. How many of us actually take time out to take a walk in the park or a jog down the beach? It's a very small number of people who are proactively thinking about their health. Weight loss is a passive means to an end for most people and will only be a temporary tool to get back into shape. Why should we have to use the term "get back into shape"? Why can't we just "be in shape"? That is the premise of the entire argument. Be in shape. Don't give yourself a chance to get back into it in the first place.
There is always a silver lining to all things bad. Technology is indirectly responsible to some extent for our lack of concern regarding health. Yet it's technology itself that will create new avenues and solutions to our problems. Sudden surge and renewed interest in alternate food sources, focus on organic food, fitness trackers and various other technology aided solutions are now at hand that will increasingly convince us that weight loss, diet and exercise are all part of the holistic approach to a healthy lifestyle.
Try switching your phone off for a day. You will perhaps feel liberated and full of life. You will have time on your hands which usually gets consumed by all the technology around you. And then maybe you can go for a walk or play an outdoor game and realize that you are already on a weight loss routine.
